Vernal Pool Landscape Patterns: FRAGSTATS

California’s vernal pools provide habitat for a suite of rare and endemic species and its continued loss highlights the importance of conservation and mitigation efforts. Due to the unique geologic and hydrologic characteristics required of vernal pool habitat, mitigation projects often result in the creation of new pools in natural vernal pool systems. However, little is known about the impact this alteration in spatial pattern of vernal pools may have on landscape ecology.

Assessing the Value of Improved Hydrologic Forecasting for Hydropower in the Sierra Nevada at Multiple Spatial Scales

Increased accuracy of snowpack measurements can potentially greatly improve planning for rest-of-year water allocations, particularly when coupled with improvements in hydrologic modeling skill. In California, the degree to which investments in improved hydrologic information systems, such as...

A programmable information system for management and analysis of aquatic species range data in California

The decline of species worldwide is both alarming and difficult to document due to a lack of reliable information on the geospatial extent and corresponding status of a given taxon. Freshwater habitats are disproportionately degraded globally with resultant declines in populations in freshwater...

Identification of invasive vegetation using hyperspectral remote sensing in the California Delta ecosystem

Estuaries are among the most invaded ecosystems on the planet. Such invasions have led in part, to the formation of a massive $1 billion restoration effort in California's Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. However, invasions of weeds into riparian, floodplain, and aquatic habitats threaten the...

Objective classification of Navarro River salmon habitat: a watershed‐based critical habitat case study

  1. Prevailing freshwater conservation approaches in the USA stem from policy-based ecosystem management directives, science-based gap analyses, and legal interpretations of critical habitats. In California, there has been no systematic prioritization of freshwater habitats critical to the

Comparative Analyses of Ecological Integrity Indices as Applied to Waters of the Mokelumne River Watershed

Freshwater resources and ecosystems are globally impaired by human activities and acutely
stressed throughout California, including the rivers and streams of the Sierra Nevada. We
assessed the condition of the Mokelumne River, a representative watershed located in the
central...

Habitat Restoration Monitoring & Assessment: A Personal Geodatabase Design

Conservation organizations are increasingly looking to assess the effectiveness of their habitat restoration activities. Such analyses require an accessible record of land use and restoration activities over time. To address these needs in a complex, multi-institutional land conservation and...

Use of a case-control study and geographic information systems to determine environmental and demographic risk factors for canine leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is increasingly diagnosed as a re-emerging canine disease in the USA. Our objectives were to describe potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis infections in northern California, through the use of a case-control study, and to perform a spatial analysis to investigate which...

Perennial Pepperweed Infestation on the Cosumnes River Experimental Floodplain A Report to the California Bay-Delta Authority

Riparian floodplains present a unique challenge for restoration management, in that these are, by definition, dynamic, constantly changing ecosystems. As restoration projects are initiated and progress through time, both native and invasive species can become established. During the initial...

CalJep: A Spatial Distribution Database of CalFlora and Jepson Plant Species

CalJep is a spatially enabled database that reconciles or cross-walks the two prominent electronic plant distribution lists for California: CalFlora and Jepson. We intersected the distribution information from the two data sources to create a refined spatial distribution repository that can be...
